been nearly two decades since Paula (Geis) Karst and her younger siblings, Karen and Sharon, last trekked into the Twin Cities together for the famous “Turkey Trot”. But why travel to downtown Minneapolis to enter a 5K, when they could just stay close to home and do it in their hometown of Shakopee? No frills. No prizes. No entry fee. But with it being close to home, they could invite LOTS of friends and family out for a Thanksgiving Day walk, run, scooter ride, wagon pull, or whatever one desires to do!

It was a no brainer for Paula. And the fun of being surrounded by family and friends - young and old…(or furry!) - on her “favorite holiday of the year” was the icing on the cake!

It started 18 years ago, with perhaps 15, maybe 20, interested family members and friends joining together for what was the inaugural “The Gobbler”. An “unofficial” 5K with no timers or pageantry. Paula Karst and her husband (Bryan Karst) simply loaded up their young children and drove to Shakopee High School and met up with their family and friends.

“The Gobbler” got it’s name from the second of their only two rules:

Be Safe! (Intersections are not patrolled)

“Gobble” (loudly!) at each corner of the course!

In those early years, the youngsters loved to participate. Of course, that was due largely to the fact that Bryan’s dad - Grandpa Ron (Karst) - would pick up the kids with his 4-wheeler when they got tired, and he would give them all a ride home! Grandpas know how to make family gatherings special, and Ron is special grandpa who, along with Grandma Joan, were both raised in Shakopee, and in turn, have raised their family in Shakopee. Both the Karst and Geis families are families that are based in faith and love, and the ideology that there is nothing better than a gathering of family and friends! And with both sides of the family having that same ideology, the Bryan and Paula (Geis) Karst family feels blessed each time they gather together for special occasions, like “The Gobbler”.

Once a small, but enthusiastic group of 15-20 participants, the annual 5K has grown exponentially over the years, and has blossomed into a group of over 160 family members and friends from around town - gathering each year on Thanksgiving morning. Paula continues to extended the invitation to family and friends, and anyone else in the community who just wants to get out there and move on Thanksgiving morning. She notes that her side of the family tends to gather and celebrate the holiday the weekend before Thanksgiving. This opens up their Thanksgiving morning each year. Afterwards, Bryan and Paula and kids - now adults - head over to gather with Bryan’s side of the family for their annual turkey dinner. Many other families who participate do the same, and so it’s just a “perfect time to get outdoors, count your blessings, and have a little fun!”, states Paula.

Since it’s beginning, The Gobbler has required no entry fee for those participating. However, the Karst and Geis families have always been two great community-oriented families. They love Shakopee and the surrounding community that they’ve grown up in. They also recognize that there are many others in the community who may not be as fortunate and blessed as they are - with family, friends, and an abundance of food on the table. Therefore, “The Gobbler” is more than just a random 5K. The Karsts have turned it into a means to pay things forward. Each year, they have a pickup truck parked near the starting point, and they accept canned food donations and/or monetary donations as a voluntary “entry fee” for their annual event. (No problem if you forget! They still want you to come!). The canned goods and money raised are donated each year to the CAP Agency in Shakopee for distribution. “We live in an amazing community, and a little bit of effort really makes a difference for those less fortunate than us!”, states Karst, adding, “Thanksgiving is a celebration where you count your blessings, and I feel so very blessed! Over the years, people have made ‘The Gobbler’ one of their favorite family traditions, and it’s just so great to see so many family and friends gathered together on my favorite holiday of the year!”. To date, The Gobbler has donated well over two tons of canned goods to the CAP Agency over it’s 17 (18) year tradition - with one year taken off for COVID. The group has also donated hundreds of dollars. Last year there was an amazing 529 pounds of food donations, and another $190.00 in cash donations. A substantial amount that continues to grow each year!

Karst and crew also invite their furry friends to the event. In fact nearly 20 dogs joined in the walk/run/stroller/scooter ride last year. Thanksgiving apparel is also highly encouraged for participants to add to the fun. “I’ve got quite the collection of turkey hats that I’ve acquired over the years!”, quips Karst. “Oh - and we like to head down to the Pullman Club (Downtown Shakopee) for an annual toast/beverage when we are done with the 5K!”, which obviously adds to the enjoyment of the gathering. The entire community is invited and encouraged to join in. “It just makes for happy hearts this time of year!” Karst exclaims.

This year’s “Gobbler” will take place on Thursday morning, Nov. 27th - (Thanksgiving Day) beginning at 9:00am. The unofficial 5k route will once again begin at the Shakopee Senior High School (100 17th Avenue) parking lot. From there they will travel east along 17th Avenue to Spencer Street, then head north to 10th Avenue, then head west (past West Middle School) to Fuller Street, then turn south - heading back to 17th Avenue, where they will return to the SHS parking lot. Those who wish to participate are encouraged to bring a canned good or cash donation if you so choose. Wear some fun turkey day apparel if you wish. Bring your kids, your pets, your parents, and your grandparents! Again, there is no registration required or fee to participate. It’s just an informal gathering of family, friends, and community members who feel blessed in life, and want to share that feeling with others. Weather is predicted to get a bit colder later this week, so dress for the weather and feel free to wear a costume or turkey hat!

Oh…And don’t forget to “GOBBLE” at each corner!

Please note: Roads are not blocked off for “The Gobbler” 5K, as it is not an official or sanctioned 5K. Please cross roads carefully and obey all laws. Participation is at your own risk.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" historical news excerpts from the Shakopee area from this week in years gone by:

150 Years Ago: From the Nov. 18, 1875 Shakopee Argus

John Kauth, Esq., proprietor of the Saint Paul House of this city, will give a grand ball at his establishment on Thanksgiving eve. An invitation is extended to everybody. Good music will be furnished, and a pleasant time is anticipated.

125 Years Ago: From the Nov. 15, 1900 Scott County Argus

C. G. Bowdish has removed from the Hinds house, west of Chas. G. Hinds’s, on east Third street, to the Episcopal rectory.

125 Years Ago: From the Nov. 16, 1900 Shakopee Tribune

J. E. Hurd will be busy the fore part of next week stringing two more wires from Shakopee to the twin cities. The present circuits are inadequate to accommodate the increasing toll business of the independent companies.

100 Years Ago: From the Nov. 20, 1925 Shakopee Argus

John Weckmann has bought from the Henry Klinge estate a lot opposite Henry Sand’s property on Fourth street and has begun excavation for a modern home. The building will be a seven-room house but whether frame, brick or concrete has not been decided upon. If weather conditions permit it will be completed this fall.

100 Years Ago: From the Nov. 19, 1925 Shakopee Tribune

Scherkenbach’s Remodeling Interior of Store

Considerable improvements are being made in the interior of the Scherkenbach Hardware and Electric Supply building which will add materially to the store’s floor space.

The partition in the rear of the store has been removed which converts the store into one large room instead of two rooms. The Scherkenbach firm is increasing the size of its store and making other improvements at this time to be in a better position to take care of its rapidly increasing business.

Contractor Fred Rohlfs and his crew of workmen are doing the work.

75 Years Ago: From the Nov. 16, 1950 Shakopee Argus-Tribune

Chiropractic Office Opens

Dr. W. The plan for the park would be a part of the city’s bicentennial program.

Initial plans call for rededication of the present Memorial Park to take place on Memorial Day in 1976. Dedeker’s plan brought support from alderman Ron Ward and mayor Ray Foslid.

The council granted tentative approval of the plan, thus allowing the American Legion and VFW to pursue their objective. Decommissioning of a tank or artillery piece is expensive, Dedeker said, and they preferred not to pursue the matter if the council objected to the plan.

25 Years Ago: From the Nov. 16, 2000 Shakopee Valley News

Murphy’s parks system link proposed

The face of financially challenged Historic Murphy’s Landing may be changing if a proposed deal to have Hennepin Parks take over day-to-day operations of the Shakopee living-history museum comes to fruition.

Hennepin Parks and Murphy’s Landing have been meeting at a staff level for several weeks discussing the park system’s interest in entering into an operational agreement with Murphy’s. Dennis Kelly, executive director of Murphy’s, said Hennepin Parks would bring its marketing, finance and guest-services expertise to the museum and make a long-term financial commitment to the upkeep and rehabilitation of the site. He said Hennepin Parks has a goal of educating people about the history of the region in its mission statement, a component that makes the match with Murphy’s a good mix…

Subscribe to receive email updates when new posts publish.

Interested in local history? Image by: Faith Johnson @ Elevated Image Photography

By Bill Schleper

Megan Mulder — a kindergarten teacher at Sweeney Elementary School by day and the Shakopee High School (SHS) Musical Director by night — is excited for this fall’s musical: Legally Blonde The Musical. The entertaining production will be performed by a talented group of SHS drama students this upcoming week, with five separate performances spread out Thursday thru Sunday, November 20–23, at the Shakopee Senior High School Auditorium, located just inside the main entrance (Door #1) at Shakopee Senior High School, 100 17th Ave. W. (Days/times and ticket information are listed below!)

“I hope that audiences come with some nostalgia for the early aughts and a soft spot for the entertaining film Legally Blonde,” states Mulder. The story focuses on a vibrant West Coast young woman who, against all stereotypes and judgments, finds her true self in a world that’s anything but pink — Harvard University. She finds new ambitions and dreams and soon discovers that she really can achieve anything with hard work, friendship, and personal strength.

Ms. Mulder lauds the cast, crew, and staff, making it clear that they “are ALL invaluable to this program and have worked tirelessly for months to put on a very uplifting show!” Now in her 5th year as the Director at SHS, Mulder points out that although the show is technically rated PG-13 due to some innuendo, the performance is “bound to please audiences with the music and themes!”

Mulder’s directing expertise doesn’t only come from her five years of experience as the Director at SHS. She also adds 16 years of directing youth community theatre in the community to her repertoire as well. Yet she deflects her own contribution to the production, simply stating, “I am honored to work with the incredible staff and students who continue to make our Shakopee Drama program ‘So Much Better!’”

Looking in from the outside as an alumnus of a few past SHS plays and musicals from (many!) years ago, I walked the school halls behind the auditorium and could hear the power tools and saws being put to use backstage for weeks on end, with the pounding of nails and screws being driven into the well-constructed set designs. I can personally attest to the amount of hard work and pride that is put into each of these productions by not just the cast on stage but also by the set production crew, the musicians, the makeup crew, and so many others who work tirelessly behind the scenes on these terrifically entertaining productions. I can also assure you that you will enjoy some incredibly talented young voices! There is some incredible musical talent in this cast!

The proof will obviously be in the pudding, but the talent and efforts of the many experienced SHS cast members who will be entertaining you on the high school stage, along with the additional behind-the-scenes staff, will be sure to please both young and old in this one-weekend event! I would highly suggest going to either Thursday’s or Friday’s production — because you just might want to go see it AGAIN on Saturday and/or Sunday!

All five performances will be open to the public:

Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7:00 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, We want our riders to know that we are here to help them get to local food shelves safely and conveniently.”

Customers can access the free rides by using the promo code “MVTA to Pantry” when planning trips to south metro food shelves through the MVTA Connect service.

The effort runs alongside the transit authority’s Stuff the Bus food collection campaign, which accepts nonperishable food donations at Apple Valley, Burnsville, and Eagan Transit Stations. Those donations will be distributed to south metro food shelves in December.

For more information about using the free ride codes or MVTA Connect service, residents can visit www.mvta.com or call MVTA Customer Service at 952-882-7500.

Share

Shakopee Voters Approve School Operating Levy Questions

By Ryan Dahnert

The Hub

By Ryan Dahnert

Shakopee voters approved both questions on the Shakopee district’s operating levy request during last Tuesday’s special election, providing crucial funding to address a projected $7-9 million budget deficit in the years ahead.

Question One passed with 3,193 “yes” votes to 1,855 “no” votes, while Question Two received 3,115 “yes” votes and 1,925 “no” votes.

The first question will provide $5,000,052 in new annual revenue for the district. School officials described it as tax-neutral because it replaces $5,160,455 in taxes from construction debt that will be paid off in 2025.

Question Two will generate an additional $2,500,026 in annual operating revenue by providing $310 per pupil in operating levy funding beyond Question One. The approval of both questions brings the district to its maximum allowable operating levy.

Background on Budget Challenges

The levy referendum came in response to financial pressures that district officials outlined in detail at a special meeting in June. At that meeting, Superintendent Mike Redmond and Director of Finance and Operations Bill Menozzi warned that the district faced a projected shortfall of $7-9 million for the 2026-27 school year.

District leaders identified two primary factors driving the budget crisis: state funding increases that have not kept pace with inflation, and declining birth rates leading to fewer enrolled students. Redmond noted that had state aid kept pace with inflation over the past four years, the district would be receiving an additional $795 per pupil, or $6.6 million in revenue each year.

“This is not just a Shakopee issue,” Redmond said at the June meeting, pointing to similar budget challenges facing school districts across Minnesota. the 11 districts that Shakopee considers comparable districts are facing average cuts of nearly $9 million for the 2026-2027 school year, while statewide budget deficits across all Minnesota public school districts are estimated at $250-300 million collectively.

Community Support

“The School Board was seeking community direction through a two-question operating levy to address State education funding shortfalls,” said School Board Chair Jeff Smith. “As we’ve shared before, schools are a partnership with the community, and the approval of both questions by voters will allow our district to continue to support each and every student and maintain our staff, programs and services moving forward.”

Levy dollars fund educational programs and day-to-day school operations, including teacher and support staff salaries. With both questions approved, the district says it will continue providing similar service levels moving forward.

Despite the levy approval, Shakopee Public Schools will still implement $3 million in permanent budget cuts for the 2026-27 school year and another $500,000 in cuts for 2027-28.

“We’ve continued to state throughout this process, that we will always do our best to serve Shakopee students and the community,” said Superintendent Mike Redmond. “The financial challenges Shakopee is facing are similar to those affecting many public school districts across Minnesota. We are deeply appreciative of our community’s continued support of our students, staff and schools.”

The School Board will certify the election results at 6:00 p.m. on November 13, 2025, at the District Office Board Room.

<p class="button-wrapper" O. Davis of Minneapolis and L. A. Guilbert of Henderson were in Shakopee last Tuesday making arrangements to open a restaurant in the building west of Mich. Berens’ block. Mr. Guilbert owns and runs a restaurant at Henderson, and thinks the same kind of a venture in this city would be a paying one, hence he has arranged with Mr. Davis to open the restaurant the fore part of next week. The owner is thoroughly conversant with the ins and outs of the business, and the manager seems to be a hustler of the variety that captures success whether or no, and these facts augur well for the success of the Guilbert Restaurant in Shakopee. I wish to state that I am not a candidate, and that such tickets are circulated contrary to my wishes.

Nic. Schmitt.

125 Years Ago: From the Oct. 25, 1900 Scott County Argus

Last Monday morning at about ten o’clock a vigorous alarm gave the fire department some lively work before they were headed off with the intelligence that the fire was nothing more than a pile of burning rubbish in the rear of the Argus block.

125 Years Ago: From the Oct. 26, 1900 Shakopee Tribune

Miss K. Yost will remove her millinery store from the Reis block to the store in the Lander opera house recently vacated by Mrs. S. L. Hill. She expects to be installed there by the first of the month, and in the very spacious new quarters will be enabled to make a much better display of her large stock of the goods which delight the feminine heart.

100 Years Ago: From the Oct. 30, 1925 Shakopee Argus

The large porch of the Casper Lenzmeier home is being enclosed with glass, Fred Rohlfs having the work in charge.

100 Years Ago: From the Oct. 29, 1925 Shakopee Tribune

While cranking his car at his home last Wednesday evening, Frank White had the misfortune to break his arm at the wrist. Firemen were promptly called.

The interior of the cab was gutted and the blaze was confined to the vehicle. Other cars in the building escaped damage.

75 Years Ago: From the Oct. 26, 1950 Shakopee Valley News

Owner Arrives From St. Louis To Sign New Plat Allowing Utility Contracts To Be Let

By virtue of Henry Pieper arriving in the proverbial nick of time, the newest platted addition to the City of Shakopee was approved by the city council as they accepted the plat to Doyle and Pieper’s addition at an adjourned meeting Thursday night.

The council had advertised and opened bids for new sewer and water connection in the area a week previous, but could not let the contracts until the plat was accepted.

50 Years Ago: From the Oct. 29, 1975 Shakopee Valley News

Mrs. Jaycees donate $3,000 for equipment

Mrs. Jaycees donated $3000 toward playground equipment at Tahpah Park at their regular October meeting, it has been announced.

Money for the equipment was given the Mrs. Jaycees by their Jaycee husbands for work done at the Renaissance Festival…

25 Years Ago: From the Oct. 26, 2000 Shakopee Valley News

Enrollment up 24% since ’96

1,000 more expected by 2005

Enrollment in Shakopee schools has increased 24 percent since 1996, and that trend may continue with the likelihood of an additional 1,000 students entering classrooms by 2005.

Superintendent Jon McBroom presented School Board members with an enrollment history and 10-year projections on Monday.

In the last four years, he reported, the student population has grown from 3,194 to 3,973. The 9.8-percent increase between last year and this year alone is three times the growth seen in each of the last three years.

The computer program used to generate the enrollment figures takes into account trends over the past several years, McBroom explained. He said the model has estimated that enrollment will top 4,100 next year, with the district reaching the 5,000 mark around 2005-06…

Subscribe to receive email updates when new posts publish.

Interested in local history? This three-year grant is designated to hire 12 additional full-time firefighters, marking a significant step forward for public safety in the growing community.

The addition of 12 full-time positions will nearly double the department’s current fire staff and will allow the Shakopee Fire Department to provide full-time staffing from Fire Station 2 for the first time.

City Administrator Bill Reynolds called the funding a “transformational moment for our Fire Department and for public safety in Shakopee,” noting that it “helps ensure our emergency services can keep pace with that growth and continue providing the highest level of protection to our residents.”

Fire Chief Joe Simon emphasized the operational benefits of the grant. “The additional staffing will enhance our ability to respond quickly to fire and medical emergencies, improve firefighter and public safety, and support our mutual aid partners throughout the region,” he stated.

The City is set to begin the hiring process immediately, with onboarding and training for the new full-time firefighters expected to begin in 2026.

Visit the Let all turn out, for a good road there is greatly needed.

125 Years Ago: From the Oct. 4, 1900 Scott County Argus

Since last Sunday there can be no doubt in the minds of the hotel men that the new bicycle path is a benefit to them. Over 150 wheelmen were in town at the opening of the new path, and of this number 53 registered at the Occidental, 50 at the Central, 29 at the United States, and 54 at the Oriental hotels.

125 Years Ago: From the Oct. 5, 1900 Shakopee Tribune

The Northwestern telephone company has installed a new switchboard in their Shakopee station in the Strunk drug store, with fifteen shutters. The new line to Minneapolis has been added, and a new one south, which enables the Strunk’s to call up Jordan, New Prague, and other towns along that line without first calling up Minneapolis.

100 Years Ago: From the Oct. 9, 1925 Shakopee Argus

Plastering will begin next week on W. L. Anderson’s new bungalow which is being rushed to completion before winter arrives to stay.

100 Years Ago: From the Oct. 8, 1925 Shakopee Tribune

Very Large Apples Grown in Shakopee and Vicinity

Thos. McDevitt, who resides two and one-half miles south of Shakopee, stopped at this office Monday morning with some very fine apples which were part of this year’s crop grown on his farm. They were unusually large specimens of the Wolf River variety. Mr. McDevitt left three of the apples with us which we have placed on display in our office window. The largest of the apples left at our office measures 14 ¾ inches in: circumference and 3 ¾ inches deep at the core…

75 Years Ago: From the Oct. 5, 1950 Shakopee Argus-Tribune

Pigeon Raiser Writes Story

An article by W. B. Schroeder, Shakopee pigeon raiser, got the lead spot in the October issue of the American Pigeon Journal. One of his photographs illustrating the story also was used as the cover piece.

Schroeder’s story concerned the work of L. M. Smith, St. Louis Park, who has been raising English Pouters since 1900. The Pouter, Schroeder said, is one of some 300 pigeon varieties which hold the interests of pigeon fanciers.

75 Years Ago: From the Oct. 5, 1950 Shakopee Valley News

Voters To Act On Bond Issue

Scott county voters will be asked to approve two bond issues totaling $130,000 at the general election Tuesday, November 7. The money, if approved, would be used for a new jail, sheriff’s residence, and an addition to the courthouse for office space…

25 Years Ago: From the Oct. 5, 2000 Shakopee Valley News

Walgreen’s, new DQ heading to Co. Rd. 17

Shakopee is gaining more than new residents these days. New businesses continue to eye the city.

On the northwest corner of Marschall Road and Vierling Drive, construction workers are building quarters for a Dairy Queen and Walgreen’s store. The DQ will be located north of Video Update on the west side of Marschall Road. Kitty-corner from that work, workers from S. M. Hentges are working on the widening of Vierling Drive and County Road 17. They are adding turn lanes to accommodate traffic flow onto and off the roadways. The new turn lanes are expected to be ready this fall.

In the Shakopee Valley Marketplace, the development anchored by Target at the intersection of Marschall Road and 17th Avenue, a Kindercare child-care facility is being proposed for the open site near the intersection of 17th Avenue and Sarazin Street…

Subscribe to receive email updates when new posts publish.

Interested in local history? 2024.

Submitted by Minnesota Valley Transit Authority

Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) was honored with the Management Innovation Award at the Minnesota Public Transit Association’s (MPTA) Annual Awards Ceremony in Rochester on October 6, recognizing the agency’s pioneering deployment of five battery electric buses—the first of their kind in Minnesota and the Midwest.

As MVTA explored a path toward zero-emission transit, the agency took time to engage with riders, staff, city and county partners, and community stakeholders to ensure its electric transition approach was practical and responsive to local needs. That collaborative process set the stage for an innovative solution that both advanced sustainability and strengthened service for the south metro.

2024 introduction

In 2024, MVTA introduced five Karsan e-Jest electric buses into regular service—becoming the first transit agency in the Midwest to do so. The milestone positioned MVTA as a suburban leader in sustainable transportation and demonstrated its commitment to environmental stewardship, innovation, and an improved rider experience.

Each electric bus prevents approximately 52 tons of carbon emissions annually while delivering significant cost and operational benefits. Early results show fuel savings of around $14,000 per bus per year compared to diesel buses, and the vehicles have proven highly reliable even in Minnesota’s harsh winter conditions, returning from four-hour shifts with 30–40 percent battery power still available.

“These electric buses are an incredible example of innovation meeting impact,” said MVTA Chief Executive Officer Luther Wynder. “This project demonstrates that sustainability and service quality can go hand in hand. We’re proud that MVTA is leading by example and showing that suburban transit agencies can take bold steps toward a cleaner, more efficient future.”
<div Ryan Dahnert

As Fire Prevention Week approaches (Oct. 5–11), the Shakopee Fire Department is focusing its outreach on a growing concern in homes nationwide: lithium-ion battery safety. “As firefighters, we see firsthand how quickly a small hazard can turn into a life-changing emergency. That’s why fire prevention is so important to us.” said Shakopee Fire Chief Joe Simon.

This year’s national theme, “Charge Into Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” highlights fire risks associated with the rechargeable batteries that power everything from phones and tablets to e-bikes, power tools, and toys. While these batteries are efficient and commonly used, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode if damaged or improperly handled.

“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient, and they’re just about everywhere,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). “Making sure the public knows how to handle them safely is critical to minimizing the potential risks they present.”

Safety Tips for Households

In preparation for Fire Prevention Week, the Shakopee Fire Department is encouraging residents to take the following precautions when buying, charging, and disposing of lithium-ion batteries:

When Buying:

Look for products that have been tested by a nationally recognized lab and display a safety certification.

Be cautious of low-cost devices or knockoffs sold online that may not meet safety standards.

When Charging:

Use only the charger that came with your device, or one recommended by the manufacturer.

Charge on a hard, flat surface—never on a couch, bed, or under a pillow.

Avoid overcharging; unplug devices once fully charged.

When Disposing:

Do not throw batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins.

Use certified battery recycling programs like Call2Recycle.org to find safe drop-off locations.

Local Outreach and Education

To help get the message out, local State Farm insurance agent Katie Odeen recently donated a toolkit of Fire Prevention Week resources to the Shakopee Fire Department, providing activities and information for children and adults alike that include age-appropriate messages about lithium-ion batteries and other home fire safety and prevention resources.

The department plans to distribute these resources during community events and school visits in early October. “We want everyone in Shakopee to feel safe and informed, especially as new technologies like lithium-ion batteries become more common in our homes. By sharing simple safety tips and having real conversations with our community, we can help prevent tragedies before they happen.” Chief Simon said.

Fire Prevention Week is the nation’s oldest public health observance and has been recognized since 1922. Local fire departments across North America participate by educating the public about fire hazards and promoting simple steps that can save lives.

For more fire safety tips and resources, visit Argus

Mill Running.—S. W. Pond’s Mill is now running. Custom work in Flour and Feed done promptly.

125 Years Ago: From the Sept. 27, 1900 Scott County Argus

E. J. Gellenbeck will next week begin the work of installing a hot water heating plant in the new store building of Flaherty & Lies.

125 Years Ago: From the Sept. 28, 1900 Shakopee Tribune

The Century Road club of the twin cities will come to Shakopee next Sunday, by way of the new Minneapolis-Shakopee cycle path. The run scheduled for last Sunday was postponed on account of the continued rains, but the several delays which have thus far blocked the club’s plans for a grand opening run will only serve to give the project added enthusiasm, and large numbers of wheelmen may be expected Sunday, weather permitting.

100 Years Ago: From the Oct. 2, 1925 Shakopee Argus

W. N. Southworth has bought the Episcopal church property which has long been unused and will probably raze the building in the future. For the time being the church has been boarded up and the yard cleaned, making a notable improvement in the appearance of the corner where it stands.

100 Years Ago: From the Oct. 1, 1925 Shakopee Tribune

New Churn Installed by Redman Ice Cream Co.

A new 1,000 pound Disbrow churn was purchased recently by the Redman Ice Cream Company and installation of same was completed last Thursday. It is now the plan of the managers of the company to increase the output of their butter materially. Only sweet cream will be used in its manufacture, and the company will churn every other day, thus insuring a sanitary and wholesome product.

The local company recently leased the Marystown creamery for a period of three years. Butter will not be manufactured in the Marystown plant. The building will be used only for the purpose of taking in cream three days each week.

Frank Hackman, who was the butter maker at Marystown, was placed in charge of the manufacture of butter here. He brought his household effects to this city last week and is now domiciled in the rooms on the second floor of the Ruppert Stemmer home.

75 Years Ago: From the Sept. 28, 1950 Shakopee Argus-Tribune

Wins Award

Leo Robeck, local Red Owl store owner, was a winner of the Life award offered by the store system in a recent sales promotion. Recognition was based on merchandise display, store appearance and sales volume. The prize was a year’s subscription to Life magazine.

75 Years Ago: From the Sept. 28, 1950 Shakopee Valley News

Hospital Drive Passes Goal, Heads For $200,000 Tonight

“Shoot for $200,000” became the keynote slogan for more than 250 volunteer workers as the campaign goal to raise $150,000 for a new 50 bed hospital here was shattered when pledges turned in Monday reached a total of $117,151 without the Rahr Foundation gift of $50,000.

The Victory report meeting will be held at St. Mark’s Hall tonight. At that time the Rahr gift will be officially added, plus the final pledges received this week. All workers are making an extra effort to secure the additional $33,600 needed to push the drive over the $200,000 mark…

50 Years Ago: From the Oct. 1, 1975 Shakopee Valley News

Dean Lake termed a depression in water table, level will vary

A report detailing the problems facing Dean Lake was submitted to the Shakopee city council Tuesday evening, over a year after the report was authorized.

Larry Samstead, of Itasca Engineering, presented bound copies of the report to the council and highlighted what was found after nearly 15 months of study…

According to Samstead, the watertable in the area flows from south to north. Dean Lake is bounded in its edges by extremely sandy, pourous soil which do not hold the water back in its place…

It had been speculated earlier that the level of Dean Lake was directly affected by water pumping operations at the J.L. Shiely quarry adjacent to the property. “The quarry does not appear to be a direct major contributor to the problem,” Samstead noted…

25 Years Ago: From the Sept. 28, 2000 Shakopee Valley News

Council OKs Co. Rd. 16 study after heated debate

A request last week for a feasibility report on the proposed realignment of County Road 16 escalated into a clash between the developer and Shakopee city councilors, with a healthy amount of Scott County bashing thrown in for good measure.

Despite a potential minefield of opposition yet to come, the City Council voted 3 to 2 on Sept. 19 to have the study performed…

Subscribe to receive email updates when new posts publish.

Interested in local history? With 5 regular season games left, the Sabers are now 5-4-1.

The first game was against conference foe and 2024 state champion Eagan Wildcats (4-1-2) in Eagan. The Sabers won 1-0 off a beautiful team goal. Momentum built throughout the second half, with connections shifting play from side to side. The ball was moving!

Sophomore goalkeeper Blake Leary came up big in the second half numerous times when Eagan threatened. He kept the momentum in the Sabers’ direction. In the final 10 minutes, the breakthrough came. Luca had the ball at the top of the box and took a shot. Three defenders keyed in on him and missed Jean Carlo sneaking in on a diagonal run. Luca took a touch to draw them in further and then slotted the ball into space. Jean Carlo buried it—blasting it over the goalkeeper’s shoulder and into the back of the net.

Plenty of time remained, and the Wildcats pressed. But the Sabers held on and walked away with their first big win of the year, 1-0.

The most recent game was a 2-1 win over Park of Cottage Grove on Saturday night. Jean Carlo continued his hot streak, scoring both goals.

The first came in the opening half. Jorge dribbled along the sideline and reached the end line. He pulled the keeper to the near post. Jean Carlo cut in front of a defender at the back post and hammered it home. Later in the half, Park tied it up with a long-range shot to send both teams into halftime knotted at 1-1.

The second half was full of tension. Both teams went back and forth, and the Sabers had to weather a heavy storm for about 15 minutes late in the match. But the defense held strong and denied Park a go-ahead goal.

Then, with three minutes to play, Andy chased down a pass along Park’s back line. Jean Carlo joined him to double-team the last defender and force a turnover. From there, it was a foot race—and the Saber speedster won. Jean Carlo found himself on a breakaway, one-on-one with the keeper. He touched the ball around him and calmly passed it into the net.

Park pushed everyone forward in the final minutes, but the Sabers held them off and secured a 2-1 win.

This coming week, the Sabers face Prior Lake on Tuesday, Lakeville North on Thursday, and Apple Valley on Saturday.

<p class="button-wrapper" (May 2025)

By Wes Reinke

Below are historical news excerpts from the Shakopee area from this week in years gone by:

150 Years Ago: From the Sept. 9, 1875 Shakopee Argus

The Minnesota River is still within its banks but almost brim full. It is not likely to raise any higher at present.

125 Years Ago: From the Sept. 6, 1900 Scott County Argus

The Condon building has been secured by the fair association for use as floral hall during the coming street fair, and ladies may bring their fancy work and choicest flowers for exhibition there with the assurance that the articles will be taken care of in the best possible manner by competent management. The exhibits will be so arranged that nothing will be spoiled.

125 Years Ago: From the Sept. 7, 1900 Shakopee Tribune

John A. Dean has a novel power wheel on exhibition at his shop, which can be utilized for many purposes, such as pumping water, churning. etc. A light water spaniel will furnish sufficient power for ordinary purposes and is strong enough to keep up perfect motion while raising 250 pounds attached to the lever on its upward motion. The wheel will soon find its way to the farmers’ home to furnish the power instead of wind mills.

100 Years Ago: From the Sept. 11, 1925 Shakopee Argus

Durose House Burns

At five o’clock last Sunday morning the fire department was called to the William Spoerner building, better known as the Durose building on East Second street, which was discovered to be on fire by A. C. Geiger, who turned in the alarm.

The fire had apparently been burning for a long time before it was seen and had gained such headway that the structure was damaged beyond repair by flames and water. The frame building still stands but the interior is a mass of debris, water ruining all that escaped fire. Had it not been for Saturday night’s soaking rain, the house would probably have burned to the ground…

100 Years Ago: From the Sept. 10, 1925 Shakopee Tribune

The public library will be closed and no further books given out for a few weeks, or until all of the books that are now out, have been returned. The librarian will be present at the rest room this afternoon to accept books. After today books may be left at the R. C. Kline store.

75 Years Ago: From the Sept. 7, 1950 Shakopee Argus-Tribune

Rahr Firm Building New Storage Unit

Excavation work in preparation for the construction of a group of massive grain storage tanks got under way at the Rahr Malting company plant here Wednesday morning…

75 Years Ago: From the Sept. 7, 1950 Shakopee Valley News

Phone Building To Be Enlarged

Announcement of the awarding of a construction contract for an addition to the present telephone building in Shakopee was made today by E. G. Leibold, manager of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company…

The piece of land adjoining the rear of the present central office location has been acquired and a new one-story “L”-shaped brick and joist addition similar to the present building will be started immediately. It is expected that construction will be completed by spring…

50 Years Ago: From the Sept. 10, 1975 Shakopee Valley News

Shakopee to attempt building of outfall, boat ramp on river

Shakopee has applied for a Department of the Army permit to improve an existing outfall structure and construct a boat launching ramp on the Minnesota River at the riverward extension of Sommerville, according to William L. Goetz, chief of the construction-operations division…

Subscribe to receive email updates when new posts publish.

Interested in local history?
