Boy Scout Troop 218 is marking a major milestone this year: 100 years of scouting in the Shakopee community. The troop, founded in the fall of 1924 by a small group of local businessmen, has helped generations of young men build lifelong skills and experience unforgettable adventures.
Over the past century, Scouts in Troop 218 have learned everything from first aid and fire-building to cooking, plant identification, and knot tying. They’ve taken those skills on the road, traveling to destinations like Glacier National Park, the Oshkosh Airshow, the Boundary Waters’ Okpik program, and Michigan’s Porcupine Mountains.
Behind the troop’s success is a legacy of dedicated leadership. Hundreds of adult volunteers have supported the Scouts over the years, including longtime scoutmaster Wallace Kopisca, who first took on the role in 1951 and remains active with the troop today.
Troop 218 has proudly produced more than 200 Eagle Scouts and participated in high-profile scouting events, including national jamborees and high-adventure trips to Philmont Scout Ranch. The troop has also spent more than 70 weeks at Many Point Scout Camp in northern Minnesota.
To honor its 100-year history, Troop 218 is hosting an open house on Sunday, April 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Shakopee VFW Club. Former Scouts, leaders, and community members are invited to attend. Free tickets are available at myevent.com/troop218, , where guests can also sign a digital guestbook and share their favorite scouting memories.
