On April 27th of this year, Southwest News Media and its six papers ceased publication. The Hub is an experimental effort to help fill the void in local news coverage. Especially during election season, we feel it is important to provide information on local elections in one place.
We plan to provide information on the elections, candidate information and more through audio podcasts, articles and short-form posts. We will not be endorsing any candidates and will being doing our best to present the information in as unbiased a manner as possible (see “patience and grace” below).
Patience and Grace
Although I was the editor of the newspaper in High School, I am not a practicing journalist. It has also been about 24 years since I’ve taken English composition, so expect some grammatical issues…Also, we are doing this in our spare time….Expect some issues.
Where could this go beyond election day?
To be clear, this is starting out as a volunteer effort primarily driven by two fellas who have full-time jobs and families with busy kids. If this effort fails to build traction with an audience or becomes overly burdensome with little hope of gaining volunteer or financial support, it may, in the words of Dylan Thomas, "go gentle into that good night" post-Election Day.
But if we gain some traction, have fun, and see a path to a self-sustaining organization, this could be the start of a reliable source of local news and information in the southwest metro. Let’s have some fun.
