The Robert Patterson Post 3 of the American Legion, one of the oldest posts in Minnesota, continues to make a significant impact on the Jordan community. Distinguished by its low post number, Post 3 was established in 1919, just after the national organization’s founding. Today, it boasts 51 members and remains one of the few American Legion posts in the state that is actively growing—up from just 15-18 members in 2008.
This past fall, Post 3 demonstrated its commitment to the community by donating new classroom flags to Jordan Elementary School. Jordan Elementary Principal Melissa Barnett expressed her gratitude, stating:
“This past fall, the Jordan Legion, Post 3, donated American flags to classrooms to replace the older, worn and mismatched flags we had in classrooms, as well as provided new flags to rooms in the new addition of our building. We are so appreciative and grateful for the continued support from our local veterans and community members. It was a memorable and heart-felt donation that we will cherish at JES for years to come!"
Building Community Connections
Post 3’s dedication to youth and education extends beyond flag donations. The post hosts the American Legion Oratorical Contest, which develops knowledge of the U.S. constitution among high school students.
Post 3 takes great pride in honoring veterans and upholding patriotic traditions. Each August, they host a flag retirement ceremony at Veterans Park in Jordan, ensuring that worn flags are respectfully retired in a solemn and dignified manner.
The post also consistently gives back to the community by donating to the Jordan Food Shelf, as well as supporting the Lions and Fire Department’s food basket programs.
Deeply embedded in Jordan’s community life, Post 3 is a familiar presence at events like Celebrate Jordan, where they operate a booth to connect with residents. Their most popular fundraiser is the sale of deep-fried tacos during the Heimafest car cruise, which provides critical funding for their programs.
With a rich history and a growing membership, Post 3 continues to embody the values of the American Legion. Through their service, camaraderie, and dedication, they honor the legacy of their organization while strengthening the fabric of the Jordan community.
