The Shakopee Activities Department recently hosted its Spring Signing Ceremony at Shakopee Senior High School’s main gym, with over two dozen student-athletes participating in this year’s event. This signing event recognized numerous Shakopee High School students who are planning to further their education at various colleges and universities, and also honored them as athletes who intend to pursue sports at the collegiate level.
According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), only about 6% of student-athletes ever go on to compete at the collegiate level. If you asked the large contingent of family, friends, teammates, and coaches in attendance at Wednesday’s celebration, they would agree—it’s an accomplishment well worth celebrating. The Shakopee Athletic Department, under the direction of Activities Director and MC Matt Hanson, delivers big each spring by recognizing and honoring these student-athletes with an amazing program. Attendance was estimated at over 300–350 of the athletes’ biggest fans!
This year’s Spring Signing Event featured 25 superb athletes from the Class of 2025—arguably the most athletic class in Shakopee’s history. The athletes represented a cross section of sports including basketball, soccer, golf, tennis, lacrosse, wrestling, volleyball, baseball, track & field, football, dance, and even a triathlete! Yes—you read that right. Olivia Wimberger, one of this year’s signees, is quite possibly the first student-athlete, male or female, in Shakopee High School’s incredible history to pursue this line of athletics. Triathlon is still considered a developing NCAA event, but triathlons and triathletes have been fully recognized for decades as an Olympic sport. Wimberger has chosen the University of Denver as her academic and athletic destination. The Division I Pioneers were ranked #4 in the nation as a women’s triathlon team.
Wimberger is just one example of the outstanding athleticism within the graduating Class of 2025. The 2025 Shakopee Sabers have sent teams to the Minnesota High School State Tournaments in football, wrestling, swimming, basketball, and hockey—with spring sports still to be determined, as the playoff season is just beginning for many spring sports. That’s a LOT of talented athletes in one class!
This year’s Letter of Intent signees include:
It will be fun following these student-athletes, as well as those who signed previously throughout the year, as they continue to grow and develop as young men and women who are pursuing their academic and athletic dreams. They are part of of a truly outstanding class of student-athletes at Shakopee High School!
