On Thursday, members of the Shakopee Chamber of Commerce gathered at Canterbury park for the chamber’s 2025 annual meeting. The meeting showcased major development projects, business growth, and economic initiatives shaping the future of the community.
Canterbury Park Development and Expansion
Randy Sampson, CEO of Canterbury Park, highlighted the extensive development efforts around the racetrack property. Commercial partnerships with The Doran Group, Greystone Construction and other developers have resulted in award-winning office buildings, entertainment venues, restaurants and residential developments such as the Triple Crown Apartments. Key projects currently under construction include:
The new Boardwalk Kitchen & Bar, currently under construction, will feature a premier restaurant, event space, and outdoor seating overlooking the racetrack.
The Amphitheater, a state-of-the-art music venue expected to attract top-tier artists and large audiences, will open on 2025, with an estimated annual attendance of over 600,000 visitors.
Sampson emphasized Canterbury Park’s strong partnerships with the city and county, and their strategic long-term approach, allowing for patient, high-quality development.
Shakopee’s Economic Growth and Business Expansion
Mayor Matt Lehman shared updates on Shakopee’s economic progress, highlighting the city’s low tax rates, business-friendly policies, and ongoing infrastructure improvements. Key developments include:
New Business Openings and Expansions:
Sam’s Club Midwest Distribution Center has opened, bringing 100 new jobs.
Quality Equipment relocated its headquarters to Highway 169.
GN ReSound, a global leader in hearing technology, is moving into the former Shutterfly site, with plans to employ 900 people.
Housing Growth: Over 200 single-family home permits were issued in 2024, in addition, several additional apartments opened, including The Blakely, Emblem Shakopee, and Omry at Canterbury 55+ apartments.
Infrastructure Enhancements:
Construction of a pedestrian tunnel under County Road 78.
A new roundabout at Eagle Creek Blvd and Vierling Drive.
Continued investment in parks and recreational areas.
Lehman also praised the city’s police and fire departments for their efficiency and emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong public safety infrastructure.
Shakopee Chamber’s 2024 Achievements and 2025 Priorities
Tim Zunker, President of the Shakopee Chamber, outlined the chamber’s accomplishments and strategic goals:
Legislative Advocacy: The chamber successfully lobbied for a Shakopee-area workforce scholarship program and supported legislation for “social districts” in Shakopee that allow the open-carry of alcohol in designated areas.
Workforce Development:
Expansion of the Career Lift Initiative in partnership with Scott County and local colleges.
High school workforce programs, including internships and certification training.
Efforts to retain young professionals in the area amid projected demographic shifts.
Tourism and Events:
Shakopee hosted a record-breaking Rhythm on the Rails concert series, drawing 33,000 attendees.
Continued success with the Shakopee Lantern Festival and Holiday Fest.
Looking ahead, the chamber aims to enhance business advocacy, workforce development, and community engagement. Zunker also stressed the need to stay innovative to avoid stagnation and ensure Shakopee remains a competitive business environment.
New Chamber Leadership and Board Members
Raul Rehnborg, Vice President of ValleyFair, was sworn in as the 2025 Chair of the Chamber Board. In his remarks, he emphasized the chamber’s role in fostering economic growth, advocating for businesses, and strengthening community partnerships.
Outgoing board members Tim Whitcomb (Farmer’s Insurance) and Chad Peterson (Integrated Marketing+Design) were recognized for their service, while new board members Jeff Andrews (Holiday Inn Express & Suites), Mary Hernandez (Mi C.A.S.A.), and Tom Frazier (Shakopee Chevrolet) were introduced.
Looking Forward
The Shakopee Chamber of Commerce remains focused on key initiatives, including:
Advocating for sports betting legislation that benefits both tribal nations and Canterbury Park.
Supporting state-level tourism funding and workforce tax credits.
Promoting business retention and attraction efforts through targeted economic development programs.
With new developments, growing businesses, and an engaged chamber, 2025 is set to be a transformative year for Shakopee.
