Shakopee residents and visitors have a new way to experience downtown and Canterbury Park this fall. The city has officially launched its first-ever Social District, allowing people to purchase a drink from a participating bar or restaurant and enjoy it while walking through designated outdoor areas.
The district is divided into two zones: one in downtown Shakopee, covering 1st and 2nd Avenue between Spencer and Atwood streets, and another surrounding Canterbury Park. The program runs daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through October 31, with special holiday hours December 6–7.
More than a dozen local establishments are part of the launch, including Arnie’s Bar, Turtle’s Bar and Grill, Shakopee Brew Hall, Pablo’s Mexican Restaurant, Badger Hill Brewing, Bravi's Craft Mexican Kitchen and Mr. Pig’s Smokery. Each participating business serves drinks in official compostable Social District cups, and visitors can spot “Drinks Welcome” or “No Drinks Permitted” signs at storefronts to know where beverages are allowed.
The Social District didn’t happen overnight. Its creation stems from a 2024 change in Minnesota state law, which authorized Shakopee, along with Anoka and Stillwater, to pilot the concept. City leaders and
local business owners supported the effort, seeing it as a way to boost foot traffic, create a lively atmosphere, and give people more reasons to explore downtown.
Community members are already buzzing about the potential. The idea of strolling between shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues with a glass in hand has been a success in other cities, and Shakopee hopes to see similar energy here.
"Our organization is incredibly excited for the opening of the Shakopee Social District, with locations in Downtown Shakopee and Canterbury Park," said Tim Zunker, President of the Shakopee Chamber & Visitors Bureau. "As only the second city in the state of Minnesota to have a social district, we see a tremendous opportunity for increased commerce for our small businesses."
