The Hub News is a nonprofit, non-partisan news organization dedicated to serving the communities of Shakopee, Jordan, and the surrounding areas. Our mission is to provide reliable, in-depth, and community-driven journalism, filling the void left by traditional local news outlets. We cover a wide range of topics, including local government, education, business, sports and community events.
Position Summary
The Hub News is seeking a part-time Editor to oversee daily operations of the organization, including the newsroom’s editorial operations, guide volunteer, freelance and staff reporters, and ensure high-quality, fact-based journalism. The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist with a passion for local news, strong editing skills, and the ability to mentor and collaborate with a growing team of contributors.
This role is approximately 10-15 hours per week with flexible scheduling. Some work will be remote, but in-person engagement within our coverage area is required.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee editorial content and maintain The Hub News’ high journalistic standards.
Assign, review, and edit articles for clarity, accuracy, and adherence to style and organizational guidelines.
Work with reporters and freelancers to develop story ideas and provide editorial feedback.
Ensure balanced, non-partisan coverage of local government, education, business, and community events.
Write articles, editorials, or special reports as needed.
Manage content deadlines and workflow to ensure timely publication.
Collaborate with the publisher on editorial strategy, audience engagement, and community outreach.
Help maintain The Hub News’ digital presence, including website and social media updates.
Qualifications
Experience: 3- 5 years in journalism or related field, with previous editing experience preferred.
Writing & Editing Skills: Strong ability to edit for grammar, style, structure, and clarity.
News Judgment: Deep understanding of local news, media ethics, and the principles of non-partisan reporting.
Leadership: Experience managing writers and working collaboratively in a newsroom environment.
Digital Proficiency: Comfortable working with CMS platforms (such as WordPress), social media, and basic multimedia tools.
Community Engagement: Passion for local journalism and a commitment to serving the communities of Shakopee, Jordan, and surrounding areas.
